Correspondence between Professor John E. Bardach of the University of Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology and TAC Chair Sir John Crawford concerning the potential role of aquaculture in increasing the availability of animal protein in Asia and the Pacific, and a possible workshop on the subject sometime in the spring of 1972. Two attached documents: "A Program for Aquaculture in Southeast Asia," prepared by the Oceanic Institute for USAID, and "The Blue Revolution," on extending research underway in Hawaii to the rest of the Pacific. Agenda item presented at TAC Second Meeting, October 1971

Preliminary Report on the Distribution of Bottom Organisms in West Lake Okoboji, Iowa

Little is known of the bottom fauna of the locality. This passage is taken from an Extension Bulletin of the State University of Iowa which describes the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji and its facilities for biological investigations. It should be stressed at the outse.t that there are few lakes which do not share with Okoboji this relatively unexplored state of their bottom biota. A study was begun in July 1950 with a view to eventually answering the following questions: 1. What is the distribution of macroscopic bottom dwelling animals in the lake? 2. Does this distribution follow a pattern that can be correlated with environmental factors such as the nature of bottom deposits, slope of the bottom in various regions, temperature, dissolved gases in the water, currents in the lake and others

Effects of the Wind on Water Movements in Lake West Okoboji, Iowa

The term seiche was introduced in to limnological literature by Forel in 1895. He observed surface-oscillations on the Lake of Geneva and recognized them as rhythmic movements or standing waves, caused by the wind, especially noticeable when the wind fluctuated in force or ceased altogether, permitting the surface water which had piled up on the downwind surface of the lake to seek its own level again. Surface seiches have also been observed on some American lakes; Lake Mendota (Bryson and Kuhn, 1952) and Lake Erie (Hayford, 1922) to mention only a few. The amplitude of the surface seiche decreases with the size of the body of water and on most smaller lakes such as West Okoboji the phenomenon is difficult to demonstrate

Certain biological effects of thermocline shifts

Under the influence of variable climatic conditions in the spring and due to the peculiar shape of its basin, Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, showed considerable variations in mid-summer temperatures from year to year. The lake either became stratified early in June or stayed mixed until some time in August. When the thermocline formed early between 10–12 m., as usual, it left a deep hypolimnion of relatively small volume. In such years, yellow perch and other fish had weak diel movements from 12 to 5 m. and back. When, in other years, the epilimnion was deep and ample oxygen extended to 20 m, the same fish showed more pronounced on- and off-shore migrations and spent part of the day at the 20 m. contour where they foraged on the tendipedid larvae which reached greatest abundance there. In years of early stratification, however, when the midge larvae were fewer and showed some concentration between 10 and 12 m., they were not a preferred item in the diet of the perch.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42908/1/10750_2004_Article_BF00032224.pd

    Time-co-ordinated prefeeding activity in fish

Fish fed daily at a regular time under controlled artificial illumination became active daily for a number of hours just before feeding time. Experiments with killifish (Fundulus heteroclitus) in constant light and under alternating 12-hour periods of bright and dim light showed that the timing of the pre-feeding activity is influenced by shifts in the light cycle and feeding time; when feeding time in constant light was shifted 6 hours, the pre-feeding activity shifted approximately 6 hours in 1 to 3 days. The conclusion was reached that the pre-feeding activity is a consequence of conditioning the act of feeding to an endogenous cue which itself is coordinated by the time of feeding or daily changes in light.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32068/1/0000112.pd

Quality of evidence matters: is it well reported and interpreted in infertility journals?

    Get PDF
Purpose: To evaluate if the authors of published systematic reviews (SRs) reported the level of quality of evidence (QoE) in the top 5 impact factor infertility journals and to analyze if they used an appropriate wording to describe it. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. We searched in PubMed for SRs published in 2017 in the five infertility journals with the highest impact factor. We analyzed the proportion of SRs published in the top 5 impact factor infertility journals that reported the SRs’ QoE, and the proportion of those SRs in which authors used consistent wording to describe QoE and magnitude of effect. Results: The QoE was reported in only 21.4% of the 42 included SRs and in less than 10% of the abstracts. Although we did not find important differences in the report of QoE of those that showed statistically significant differences or not, p value was associated with the wording chosen by the authors. We found inconsistent reporting of the size the effect estimate in 54.8% (23/42) and in the level of QoE in 92.9% (39/42). Whereas the effect size was more consistently expressed in studies with statistically significant findings, QoE was better expressed in those cases in which the p value was over 0.05. Conclusion: We found that in 2017, less than 25% of the authors reported the overall QoE when publishing SRs. Authors focused more on statistical significance as a binary concept than on methodological limitations like study design, imprecision, indirectness, inconsistency, and publication bias. Authors should make efforts to report the QoE and interpret results accordingly.Fil: Glujovsky, Demian. Instituto de Efectividad Clínica y Sanitaria; ArgentinaFil: Sueldo, Carlos E.. Teachers’ psychological characteristics : do they matter for teacher effectiveness, teachers’ well-being, retention, and interpersonal relations? An integrative review

    Get PDF
This integrative review aims to render a systematic account of the role that teachers’ psychological characteristics, such as their motivation and personality, play for critical outcomes in terms of teacher effectiveness, teachers’ well-being, retention, and positive interpersonal relations with multiple stakeholders (e.g., students, parents, principals, colleagues). We first summarize and evaluate the available evidence on relations between psychological characteristics and these outcomes derived in existing research syntheses (meta-analyses, systematic reviews). We then discuss implications of the findings regarding the eight identified psychological characteristics—self-efficacy, causal attributions, expectations, personality, enthusiasm, emotional intelligence, emotional labor, and mindfulness—for research and educational practice. In terms of practical recommendations, we focus on teacher selection and the design of future professional development activities as areas that particularly profit from a profound understanding of the relative importance of different psychological teacher characteristics in facilitating adaptive outcomes
